Say It Ain't So

The possibility of Carnegie Deli being shuttered is just too sad to comprehend.  First, Gino's, now Carnegie?!  I think I'll drown my sorrows in a Woody Allen film.

Random Weekend Thoughts

This weekend was one of those magical weekends where the house was clean, laundry was done, and I got in the perfect amount of play time with my family and a little R&R.  Lots of bonding time with this little one who is wearing her Tinkerbell sunglasses because it was sunny and in they 70's (but will be sleeting and in the 20's on Tuesday).
I took Stella to my new obsession...Yummy Donuts on Lovers Lane.  The decor reminds me of I Heart Yogurt, there were a lot of kids for Stella to stare at in amazement, great music playing, and the donuts are so well, yummy!  They are so light you feel like you're eating air.  These aren't the ones we got but an assortment of what some of their donuts look like...how cute is the Hello Kitty one?  Not all of their donuts look like cupcakes but these are a pretty bunch.
A little further down the street at a shop called Lou Lou, these accessory bags caught my eye and then I coincidentally came across them later on The Love List.  I think they are so cute.
The Packers and the Steelers arrive tomorrow, we have had multiple bomb threats, and we're already noticing the traffic is a lot heavier...the Super Bowl is upon us here in Dallas!  It's going to be a crazy week.

e-petite

So many sweet things to adore on petite alma's new e-boutique section of their site.

Church Candles And Champagne & Sundays

I recently bought a fireplace screen and some mercury glass mushrooms from the Wisteria Outlet sale.  But I haven't stopped thinking of these candles that I saw there.  They'd be perfect for my imaginary beach house in Santa Rosa Beach, FL (wink).  They are handmade in Mexico, stamped in gold, and they are a peachy color that I bet cast a perfect warm glow.  Available in more sizes here.
And a huge thank you to Cindy of Champagne & Sundays for awarding me a Stylish Blogger Award!  It's been a fun thing swirling around the blog world, getting to know other bloggers a little better.  Here were my 7 bits about me.  Oh, Cindy...Beau Hutton is my new boyfriend, too.  What are we going to do about this?  xo

The Cupcake Cafe

I just took a trip down memory lane thanks to the Matchbook girls.  They posted a picture of a beautiful hydrangea cake from The Cupcake Cafe.  In my early days in NY, I worked for Louis Feraud in the Fashion District and The Cupcake Cafe was where we'd always get our birthday treats.  Look how pretty their cupcakes are...
Things may have changed by now but back then, the walk to
the cafe from our office was a little dodgy.  But so worth it!

And as I'm sure you've already read it cover to cover,
Matchbook  went live last night.  I happen to really love it.

Michelin Guide Turns 100

Did you know that the Michelin Guide is celebrating it's 100th anniversary?  I thought this was an interesting article about those little famous stars.

Valentine's Day Ideas

Are you gearing up for Valentine's Day?  I am!  Even when I was single, I loved this day...I never focused on the idea that you could only celebrate it if you were dating, married, etc.  It's to shower all your loved ones with happiness!  Now that I have a little one in school, I'm extra excited.  I am going to order these labels and clear bags - I've already bought the heart-shaped lollipops and will put one in each bag for Stella to pass out, using the "fun & lollipops" label.
You can find lots of ideas of what to fill your bag with here.
I think tiny toy dinosaurs would be cute for boys!
I have also given these Hable Construction lavender-filled sachets in the past.  You can order a set of three and then package each one separately.

Random Weekend Thoughts

I love the concept of these egg muffins, especially the idea of putting the leftovers in twos in a Ziploc bag to heat and eat on-the-go.  I bought the silicone muffin pans from the dollar section at Target, thinking that if I made these in the shape of a heart, my picky eater might be more inclined to eat them.
After brunch, I attended the memorial service of my sister's best friend's mother.  I probably would not normally write about this but Shelly was quite the shining star in Dallas.
What I loved about her memorial was that it was in her home, so you could truly appreciate the beautiful world that she had created, and it was more like a celebration of her life than a sad affair.  The message of the celebration was...
I also want to take a moment to thank Rachel of Rachel Passing Notes for awarding me a Stylish Blogger Award.  I found her because I was immediately drawn to the name of her blog.  I love how Rachel likens blogging to passing notes amongst friends.  I have found blogging to be a wonderful sisterhood and am happy to have found her in the sea of blogs!  Oh, and thanks to her, I made this recipe for Citrus Bow Tie Pasta last night and loved it - it'll be especially wonderful in the summer!

Class Reunion

My 20 year high school reunion is coming up in April.  I'm very nervous about going, though excited to see old friends.  I moved away shortly after high school and rarely went back.  I missed our 10 year reunion since it took place right after 9.11 and I was scared to fly out of NY at the time.  Back when I graduated, I was given Jim Metcalf's Journal, a collection of poems by a local New Orleans writer.  This one piece he wrote, Class Reunion, struck a chord in me all the way back then and I had to dig this book out of a box to re-read it.  While I am attending my reunion, it pretty much sums up how I feel.

CLASS REUNION

The last paragraph of the letter read:

"And so Jim, we of the High School Homecoming Celebration Committee sincerely hope you can be with us and all your old classmates next month.  As you know, this will be the first time we have ever attempted to get our graduating class together.  It has been a long time since those wonderful pre-war years and we will, I am sure, have much to talk about."

Regards,
Dick Martin,
Chairman

**

Dear Dick,

I regret that I will not be able to be with you for the homecoming celebration.  I must be frank and tell you that it is neither press of business nor the lack of time that precludes my being there.  Rather it is fear.  Fear that something very precious to me might be destroyed...the memories of those days, filled with the magnificent bewilderment of youth, when we were lean and eager, absurdly naive, summertime free and hopelessly in love with living.
I like to pretend that the people and the places are still there, just as they were when last I saw them.  And sometimes, when it's important that I remember what being young was like, I go back in memory to those days.
If I were to see them now, the people and the places and the changes time has brought, my little game of make-believe would be over.  It would fade into the world of reality that is, I believe, too much with us.  There would be middle-aged people where children were supposed to be, fat where once there was muscle, and wrinkles would replace the dimples I recall on certain freckled faces.
And the places...the vacant lots...the gridirons of chilly Saturday afternoons in autumn, baseball diamonds under July's burning sun; they would not be vacant now, for progress would have grown in places that had felt the footsteps of our youth.  And there would be plastic booths where tables with wrought iron legs and marble tops once held the sweet and wondrous delicacies from the soda fountain at Old Man Peter's drug store...and it would be air-conditioned.  Gone would be the drone of wooden overhead fans that mingled with the talk of English Four, and who was going steady.
So if you will, Dick, give my regrets and tell all I'll be thinking of them.  And when you hear them tell each other how they've changed, tell them that to me...they haven't...

Sincerely,
Jim

In remembering high school, I think of how my friends and I loved the movie, St Elmo's Fire, and watched it at slumber parties.  I need to sign off now before I get all nostalgic and start prank calling old boyfriends and hanging up.  But before I do, I want to know...have you attended any of your reunions?  I'd love to hear how it went!

Sweet Sheets

I happen to love that this frilly ruffle sheet set comes in navy - would be cute paired with pink!

Gypset Style

I think I need this book pronto...because I think I might really be a gypsetter trapped in the body of a preppy mom.
"Gypsetters are artists, designers, and bon vivants who live and work around the globe. The New York Times journalist Julia Chaplin explores the unconventional lives of these high-low cultural nomads." - Assouline

A Reason To Have a Party

When I found out about Jam Jars, I was intrigued.  And then I found out that the creator and I have something in common...her last name is my maiden name, Skipper, and I've never come across another Skipper!  Take a peek here at all that Emily Skipper offers from s'mores to peach cobbler, all in a jar.  There is even birthday cake!  Wouldn't these make cute favors?

Shoes & Bags for Little People

This was hands down my favorite handbag from when I was younger...the classic Bermuda Bag.  Do I order one now to save for Stella later?  Is that crazy?
Also, how cute are these shoes for mini people?
I'd happily take them in my size.

Adorable

I couldn't resist posting this precious picture taken at a family member's "unconventional post-wedding celebration".  Doesn't it just conjure up images of Truman Capote's Black & White Ball?  Only an Autumn version with little people?

Splendid Littles for Target

So excited about Splendid Littles for Target!  I have always adored this super simple, soft line but not the price tag.  I just got back from Target where I bought this striped dress in another color for Stella, along with other spring-y goodness!  Splendid Littles will be available through the end of March so hurry, hurry!
Did you also know they just opened a store in LA?
Love that big horse!

The Color Purple

I know purple has been all the rage for a while but I am just now slowly coming around to it.  Well, at least this shade of it.  My husband had Stella with him when he ducked into a store at the mall recently and he asked her to pick a shirt out for him.  Of course, she chose the lavender one.  To my surprise, he bought it and I think he'll look so handsome in it, especially in the summer with a tan.  So I guess we're both branching out where purple is concerned.
How about a dash of it with one of these frames?
p.s. Susie from Maddie G Designs was also contemplating purple recently here

Mr. Blue

Today, I give you a sweet video filled with balloons.  Balloons make me so happy.  I sometimes think I'd take them over flowers.

Limoges

After looking through Martha Stewart's Christmas photos, I have not stopped thinking of this Limoges fish platter and accompanying plates that adorned her table...

WHIT

Loving the new WHIT Spring 2011 collection, created and run by and photographed by some of my former kate spade colleagues.

Random Weekend Thoughts

Dallas weather is a little crazy.  On Saturday, we attended a birthday party with sunny skies...
And on Sunday, we were running errands in the snow.  We couldn't stop laughing in the Lowe's parking lot because Stella was trying to catch snowflakes with her tongue between giggles.
She had to pull off one mitten just to point out the tiny snowflake
that was on the other mitten.
Oh, but before we left the house, my husband dressed her.
This is the result...
By the way, I figured out that I had a mild case of salmonella poisoning from eating alfalfa sprouts.  I had listened to an expert on Martha Stewart once say that contrary to popular belief, we should not eat these raw (I can't recall the exact reason why), so I usually omit them.  But I didn't this time and I paid the price.  I'm feeling 100% now...it's going to be a good week!  Thank you for your well wishes!  xo
